Q: How can I get rid of the dark spots on my face?

A: First, lets talk about what those dark spots are. Dark spots are caused by hyperpigmentation. The experts at WebMD tell us hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin, the substance in the body that’s responsible for color (pigment).

But, enough with the biology lesson. The main reason for dark spots suddenly popping up on your formerly pristine skin, are sun exposure combined with age. Sad, but true.

If you’ve been a good girl about staying out of the sun and you’re still getting a lot of these pesky spots, get yourself to a dermatologist, pronto. There could be a medical reason why you are getting them.

However, if you’ve worshipped the sun more than you should have (like many of us have), you’ve earned those dark spots, honey. But that doesn’t mean you have to like them, or keep them!

Dark spots are actually difficult to get rid of, but you can lessen their appearance. There are many different products that claim to lighten them up a bit, but not all products are created equal. So before you purchase one of them, do your homework by researching and reading reviews online. You can also try to exfoliate with different products because sometimes this will help to naturally even out your skin.

Finally, you can attempt to stop future dark spots before they appear by never, ever going into the sun without your sun protection.  I like sun protection products from Alba Botanica, All Terrain and to protect your little ones BabyGanics.
