Let the sunshine in

September 27, 2011

Sunflowers are some of my faves. They just make me happy. When I see a bouquet of sunflowers in my kitchen, it’s like the sunshine has made itself at home on my counter. But sunflower bouquets don’t last very long. The beauty of sunflowers planted around my yard, however, lasts all summer. That makes me even happier.

How would you like some sunshine in your backyard? Not just regular sunshine – ginormous, organic sunshine. I have flipped over these Velvet Queen Organic Sunflowers from Park Seed, and I had to share them with you. They are gorgeous. These babies grow up to 5 feet tall and 8 inches across. The colors of the petals are amazing.

Now, next time I plant sunflowers, I plan on having a small field of these in my yard, but that’s not what I’m most excited about. I’ve got a plan, and I’m inviting you to join me in this. Mark your calendar for May 1, 2012. Make sure you’ve got an ample supply of sunflower seeds, the Velvet Queens or any you can get your hands on. Then, plan on doing a little Guerilla Sunflower Gardening because May 1 is always International Guerilla Sunflower Gardening Day.

On that day, people who want to spread the sunshine all over the world secretly plant sunflowers in their communities. They plant them in friend’s backyards and around signposts and in vacant lots that need some beautifying. I love this!

So what do you say? Do you want to join me in making your yard, or perhaps even your whole community, a field of sunshine?
