6 fall seasonal superfoods for super skin

Most of us know about the antioxidants in berries that are good for our skin, but in the fall and winter, fresh berries aren’t in season. There are many seasonal foods we can enjoy right now that are good for our skin – many of them will be on your Thanksgiving table next week. I bet you didn’t know that eating Thanksgiving dinner would be as good for your skin as a pampering facial, did you? Okay, I’m exaggerating just a bit there, but take a look at these seasonal foods that you can as part of  your skincare regimen.

  1. Sweet potatoes: Baked, mashed or cut into fries, the Vitamin A and beta-carotene in sweet potatoes are essential for great looking skin. Beta-carotene can even help slow down the aging process of skin.
  2. Apples: Apples are so plentiful in the fall and there are so many varieties to pick from. They’re also full of nutrients that are good for your skin. The Vitamin C in apples helps you to make collagen, a protein found in your skin that helps maintain skin’s waterproof barrier, keeping your skin moisturized and fighting off wrinkles. Apples also contain copper that helps as a natural sun protection. (But, even if you eat a whole bushel of apples a day,  you should still use SPF on your skin daily!)
  3. Carrots: Carrots are loaded with beta-carotene, Vitamin A and Vitamin C – all great for healthy skin. In addition to adding some honey-glazed carrots to your holiday table, you can also use grated carrots in a skin mask as an anti-inflammatory.
  4. Spinach: Popeye used spinach to make him strong, but you can use it to keep your skin beautiful. This superfood contains Vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin K and minerals that have anti-aging properties, can protect against the sun, work as an anti-inflammatory, and promote healthy skin cell growth.
  5. Pumpkin Seeds: When your scooping out the meat of the pumpkin for soup and pies, save those pumpkin seeds and roast them up as a snack! The Vitamin E in the seeds work as an anti-oxident. The zinc and selenium promote collagen growth and protect the skin from the sun. And, the fatty acids help the moisture in your skin. Plus, all those vitamins and minerals are great for your hair, too.
  6. Beets: The folate, vitamins A and C, iron, potassium, manganese, and fiber in beets are all wonderful for your skin. Juicing beets and carrots together (and maybe a little spinach) can make for one refreshing, drink to benefit your skin.
